The difference between Self-Esteem and Confidence

Your self-esteem is how you think and feel about yourself. Your self-esteem can affect how much you:

If you experienced any difficulties from the past, any trauma, neglect, abandonment or abuse (emotionally, physically, and/or sexually) hurt or anger it will wound the child within, if needs have not been healed from the past, then the adult will react exactly as he/she may have done in the past with feelings of hurt or anger etc and because of this, at later points in our lives, those negative experiences can manifest as anxiety issues, physical problems or illnesses, feelings of low self worth or lack of confidence. It can also affect relationships, create irrational fears or result of down days, low moods or sadness.

How do you know if your inner child needs healing? Here are some common symptoms of a wounded inner child:

  • You feel too scared to be totally open with people,you have difficulty showing them the real you.
  • You are reactive: you instantly respond to others defensively rather than fully understanding what you’re feeling. For example, feeling hurt or scared comes out as anger/ frustration.
  • No matter how much effort you put into controlling your life, you still feel totally out of control.
  • You have difficulty managing negative thoughts or beliefs about yourself.

The great news is that there are steps to take to overcome a wounded inner child that can lead to a more positive, genuine life with others.

  • Healing might include developing a strong positive inner voice rather than a critical voice that perpetuates self abuse.
  • Healing might also include learning how to accurately identify and express the feelings you are experiencing.
  • Also, learning what our needs are, individually, outside of relationships and becoming confident asking for those needs to be met.
  • We can learn how to love and nurture that child again so he/she comes out of hiding and feels more confident being with others without the mask.
  • When our inner child is loved by ourselves, we can love others without fear, take healthy risks, be genuine, reconnect with the interests that enrich our lives, and be more confident.
